The glass must have the appropriate construction or undergo the proper process to ensure the desired resistance to damage. The two basic requirements that glass should meet are protection against manual attack and, in the event of breakage, protection against injury. The method of glass processing – tempering, laminating, or reinforcing – influences the assurance of both these parameters.
Types of Safety Glass
Safety glass, due to its intended use, is divided into the following types:
- laminated glass
- tempered glass
- reinforced glass or polished reinforced glass
The most commonly used in construction and architecture are laminated and tempered glasses, which, unlike reinforced glass, have increased resistance to bending and are more resistant to temperature loads.
What exactly distinguishes them?
Laminated glass consists of two or more individual panes connected by a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) film. The films connecting the glass panes increase the durability of the laminated glass. They have greater resistance to breakage, and in the event of cracking, they provide effective protection against cuts, as the glass pieces, "held" by the films, do not shatter, and a so-called "spider web" forms at the site of the break. This type of glass is used where it is not acceptable for broken glass to completely shatter and cease to serve as a physical barrier.
Tempered glass can also be used as safety glass, which has five times greater resistance to bending than ordinary glass. It is subjected to a controlled heating process that evenly distributes stresses, followed by rapid cooling of its surface. This process causes changes in internal stresses, resulting in increased bending strength. Its breakage leads to the pane shattering into small pieces with blunt edges, thus preventing severe cuts.
Reinforced glass, like tempered and laminated glass, belongs to the group of safety glasses. It is produced by rolling with the embedding of a steel mesh with square openings of 13 mm on each side, which prevents glass shards from detaching in case of breakage. It is commonly used in industrial construction: glazing of halls, skylights, roof glazing (it can withstand significant loads caused by, for example, snow). Currently, reinforced glass is less frequently used as a substitute for safety glass and much more often as original decorative glass with a raw, industrial character.
Any Combination
In windows, external doors, facades, winter gardens, and in all glass constructions separating us from the outside, insulating glass units are used. These are glasses consisting of two or three glass panes separated by a hermetically sealed chamber filled with noble gas, and the entire construction is enclosed in a spacer frame. The construction of the glass allows for the use of different glass panes, providing the opportunity to customize the construction to meet individual customer requirements.

Safety glass, just like ordinary glass, can be transparent, frosted, or tinted throughout. Thanks to the films, additional properties such as sound absorption, translucency protection, and aesthetic qualities can be achieved (with the help of four films, we can create any color).
Increased Protection
To ensure a high level of security, anti-burglary glass can be used. A glass with a resistance class of P4 consists of a pane connecting two glasses and four PVB films. It should be remembered that although safety glasses significantly improve the resistance of our doors or windows, they alone will not protect us against burglary. Appropriate fittings such as hinges or locks and glazing beads should be used.
